The pharmacy's origins lie in the Friendly Societies movement, organisations built on the principle of mutual support and community wellbeing. When rising medicine costs threatened affordability for local families during World War I, several Friendly Societies came together to establish the United Friendly Society Dispensary, helping ensure members could access the healthcare services they needed.

More than a century later, UFS Chemist Mount Gambier remains the only not-for-profit pharmacy in the Mount Gambier region. While healthcare has evolved significantly since 1916, our commitment to supporting the health and wellbeing of our local community remains unchanged.

Today, UFS Chemist Mount Gambier continues to provide pharmacy services, medicines, healthcare advice and personalised support to individuals and families across Mount Gambier, the Limestone Coast and South East South Australia. Any surplus generated through our operations is reinvested into local community initiatives, sponsorships and support programs.

More than 100 years on, UFS Chemist Mount Gambier remains proudly community-focused, locally connected and committed to putting people first.

UFS Chemist Mount Gambier is guided by a dedicated Board of Directors who help ensure our organisation remains focused on its not-for-profit purpose, community values, and long-term sustainability.

John Williamson

John was appointed to the Board in 2010 and serves on the Promotions and Human Resources Committees while also providing legal counsel. As a principal solicitor in Mount Gambier, John has a strong interest in supporting local organisations and contributing to the ongoing success of community-focused initiatives.

Bernadette Douglas

Director

Appointed to the Board in 2008, Bernadette serves as Chair of the Promotions Committee. With qualifications in business and community sector management, extensive experience across banking, public, not-for-profit and commercial sectors, and a strong history of community involvement, Bernadette brings valuable leadership and governance experience to the Board.

Valerie serves as a Director of UFS Chemist Mount Gambier, contributing to the governance and strategic direction of the organisation and supporting its commitment to serving the local community.
